Heartworm Prevention:

ProHeart 6: Injectable heartworm prevention that protects against both heartworms and hookworms via an injection every 6 months. Dogs must be at least 6 months of age before beginning this medication and have a negative heartworm test.

Interceptor Plus: Monthly chicken flavored chewable that prevents against heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. This medication can be given to dogs as early as 6 weeks of age and weighing over 2 pounds.

Trifexis: Monthly beef flavored tablet that prevents against heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms with the added benefit of a flea prevention. This medication is for dogs over 8 weeks of age and weighing more than 5 pounds. This medication is used with caution in dogs that have experienced seizures in the past.

Advantage Multi: Monthly topical application used to prevent heartworms and fleas. Other benefits of this medication include the treatment and control of roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms along with sarcoptic mange. Advantage Multi can be used to treat microfilaria in heartworm positive dogs as well. Care must be taken for 60 to 90 minutes after application to ensure correct dosage. It is recommended to limit the frequency of bathing when using this product. Advantage multi can be given to both dogs and cats.

Flea and Tick Prevention:

Nexgard: Monthly beef flavored chew used to treat fleas and ticks. Nexgard can be given as to puppies as young as 8 weeks of age as long as they weigh at least 4 pounds. Nexgard is the only FDA-approved flea and tick medication that prevents against Lyme Disease. This medication is used with caution in pets with a history of seizures.

Simparica: Monthly liver flavored chewable used to treat fleas and ticks. Simparica will start to control a flea infestation in 3 hours and ticks within 8 hours. Simparica can be used in dogs once they are 6 months of age. This medication is used with caution in pets with a history of seizures.

Bravecto: Beef flavored chew that is given to dogs greater than 6 months of age that treats and prevents fleas and ticks for 3 months with only 1 chew. Bravecto is also available for cats as a topical application once they reach 6 months of age. This medication is used with caution in pets with a history of seizures.

All of these medications can be used safely with any heartworm preventative in order to provide complete parasite prevention for your pet.
